The Basics about Sector Fund Investing

What are sector funds?

Sector funds are mutual funds that invest in a single industry or market segment such as energy, gold, or health care. Sector funds enable investors to choose specific industries, and offer the investor the opportunity to a whole group of companies without having to do the individual research on each company. See Fidelity's sector fund explanation for more information. (back to index)

Why use sector funds?

The primary reason that Bestsectors uses sector funds is momentum; the tendency of a fund to follow a trend. Sector funds that show the best technical analysis tend to outperform sectors with poorer technical strength for many months. This is the basis for our fund investment strategy. For you, the investor, you only need to switch when the technical’s support that the trend of the particular sector is becoming exhausted. That is the basis of Bestsectors.com. (back to index)

How do I create a sector fund portfolio?

Fidelity Investments, in my opinion, work the best. It is what I use in Bestsectors. The reason to choose Fidelity funds: low sales charge, customer support is excellent, and website site and exchanges of funds are easy to use and understand. All you need to do is go to Fidelity Investments and follow their directions for creating a new account (under the Customer Service tab click Open an Account). If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact Fidelity’s customer support. They will help walk you through setting up an account. If you are transferring a large amount you may want to discuss this with them on the best way of doing this for your individual needs. Bestsectors is not affiliated with Fidelity. Fidelity customer service cannot help you with questions about Bestsectors, our strategy, or our recommendations. (back to index)

How Bestsectors Works

What is Bestsectors' strategy?

Bestsectors.com identifies the best-performing sector funds and provides you with the information based on their performance against other sectors. Every Fidelity sector fund is ranked monthly in terms of its strength using technical analysis in multiple timeframes. In each monthly newsletter, I will provide you with a ranking of what I see as the best sectors to be invested in at that time. (back to index)

How does Bestsectors rank the sectors?

Each Fidelity sector fund (over forty) is reviewed using technical analysis based on multiple timeframes of each sector. When we see changes in our technical analysis for each sector, in which that particular sector starts to trend down, then the sector falls in our ranking system. The opposite is true when we see a sector that is trending up in our technical analysis, then that sector rises in our ranking system. We will rank every sector fund within Fidelity sector funds using a simple numbering and strength system. Starting with the best as # 1 and proceeding down until all sector funds are ranked. Also each fund will be assigned a strength number along with its ranking. The strength numbers will be 1 thru 100. Here is an example: In your newsletter we rank gold as our number #1 sector with a strength number of 80. Next, we rank health care as #4 with a strength of 58. All of the sectors offered in Fidelity will be rank and assigned a strength number. (back to index)

Is Bestsectors a Buy-and-Hold strategy?

Yes and No. Bestsectors is a trending strategy in which we are jumping in on the various sectors as they are trending up and jumping out of each sector as they are trending down, based on signals from our trading system. In some instances we are holding various sectors for some time, but our time frame is much shorter than your typical buy and hold strategy. (back to index)

How do I use Bestsectors?

How do I use Bestsectors to manage my portfolio?

Bestsectors will allow you the opportunity to be your own fund manager. The Bestsectors newsletter will contain a list of all the Fidelity sector funds ranked both by number and strength. Each month you will receive a newsletter via email telling you the current funds that Bestsectors is invested in, as well as, a list of all Fidelity sectors. You are responsible for going to the Fidelity website and performing the exchange into the funds you want your money to go into. Bestsectors will provide you with our current invested sectors. That's it. Probably under 30 minutes of work per month, a small amount time to take for retirement security. Bestsectors does support rebalancing your portfolio. So, when you perform an exchange simply make sure your funds have an equal amount. However, this is your account so you can make the ideas your own on account amounts. (back to index)

Shouldn’t a broker or investment advisor handle my portfolio?

Bestsectors thinks the research has shown that you have a better chance of improving your own investments results and with our help you will beat most brokers or investment advisors. If you think about all the things you do in life, isn’t 30 minutes per month worth a better retirement future. Why would you want someone to control your account, charge high fees, get poor returns and never meet with you? The Bestsectors newsletter is designed to take about 30 minutes per month. So, sit back on a Sunday morning with a good cup coffee and change your financial future. (back to index)

When/How will I receive the newsletter?

Each month you will receive the newsletter via email once you register with Bestsectors and will continue to be sent the newsletter each month as long as you continue to want the subscription.

Please remember that our strategy is based on longer-term trends. Our sector funds may not change dramatically from one month to the next. (back to index)

How many sectors can I be in at any one time?

Remember, this is your account you can be in as many sector funds as you want. Bestsectors is usually only invested in three different sectors at any given time. However, in the newsletter, all of Fidelity’s funds will be rank in order and strength which will give you the opportunity to make your own decision. Remember our strategy is to the pick the sector funds that are rising not the ones that already reached the top. (back to index)

Can Bestsectors be used for individual stocks?

No, that is not the purpose of the newsletter that you will be receiving from Bestsectors. If you want to trade individual stocks there are plenty sites our there that you can pick from to perform that function. (back to index)

How often do exchanges take place within an investor’s portfolio?

This is an area in running your own account that you must avoid doing to often. Here is why: Fidelity charges you a 0.75% sales charge if you exchange a fund that you've held less than 30 days, and those charges can add up. Remember this is what we are trying to avoid. Too many fees cost your overall return. The biggest problem however, is that Fidelity can put a hold on your trading if it occurs too frequently (in less than month). If Fidelity does put a hold on your account, you may have to wait some period of time before you can trade that sector fund. Again, contact Fidelity if you have any questions about exchanges or any other questions. (back to index)
